Century
The Modern Library's Editorial Board
announced the top 100 novels of the century on Monday July 20,
1998. The Modern Library is a division of Random House that has published
classic literature since 1917. The novels, which made the list, however,
were chosen regardless of the publisher. Board members which made up the voting
panel consisted of Board Chairman, Christopher Cerf; Daniel J.
Boorstin, a former librarian of the Library of Congress; English novelist
A.S. Byant; historians Shelby Foote, Edmund Morris, Arthur Schlesinger Jr.
and John Richardson; Vartan Gregorian, head of the Carnegie Corporation;
and American authors Gore Vidal and William Styron.
